Steps to Becoming a Real Estate Agent in North Carolina
- Complete an approved 75-hour course
- Submit an application and background check to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission
- Pass the state exam
Basic North Carolina Real Estate License Requirements
You must be at least 18 years old in order to become a North Carolina real estate agent. You must also be a United States citizen and pass a background check.
What Can I Expect During the North Carolina Licensing Exam?
You must file an application with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission and be found qualified to take the license exam. Once the Commission reviews your application, you will be issued a Notice of Exam Eligibility, which is valid for 180 calendar days from the date it is issued. The expiration date will be indicated on the Notice.
The North Carolina Real Estate exam consists of two potions – national and state-specific.
The national portion contains 80 questions, and the state-specific portion contains 40 questions. You will have 2 hours to complete the national portion, and 1.5 hours to complete the state-specific portion.
Immediately following the exam your score will be given to you. If you passed the exam, your license certificate will be mailed within 10 days of the exam date if there are no issues with your application.
How Do I Apply for My License?
You must apply for your North Carolina real estate license before you can sit for the licensing exam. The application fee is $100. A background check must be submitted within 6 months prior to filing your application.
You can access the online application on the Commission’s website. You can choose to apply for a background check while you’re going through the application, and you will be able to place an order for the required criminal record report. Additional fees will apply.
